Antique Rifles Colt model 1854 Russian contract musket

Colt model 1854 Russian contract musket

£1,895.00

approx .72 calibre Flintlock musket

This originally was a U.S. Model 1816 Type III Flintlock Musket made by Springfield Armory around 1821, and purchased by Colt later in the early 1850’s.
In those years, during the Crimean war, Russia negotiated with Colt to provide 125,000 percussion rifled-muskets.

Colt purchased these obsolete Flintlock smooth-bore muskets from the U.S. Government, rifled them, and converted them to percussion, using a nipple bolster design of his own which was patented in England June 9 1855.

A new rear sight was used and it was patented on April 16 1856.
New hammers were fitted and the date "1854" was stamped on the lockplate. this date
indicate that these arms were designed for use with the Russian Model 1854 cylindro-ogival bullet

This certainly appears to be one of these muskets, but for some reason was not converted to percussion and no rear sight is present

The last owner had the rifleing removed and made into a smoothbore musket for use as such and had it reproofed with modern marks, which is a shame on such a rare piece!

We are selling as a decent musket with a great bore

Although it has new proof marks, it is being sold as an antique/curio and for decoration

No license required as antique/ curio
